There are four concurrent story lines. The first follows the crew of an experimental Chinese nuclear submarine in the South-central Pacific, a honeymooning couple flying from New York to Rome. A group of young people in a Dublin bar commiserating over one of the job termination of one of their number, and a generic family of four in an unnamed North American city. A supermassive CME (coronal mass ejection) of material from the Sun, renders all electronic devices useless and also demagnetizes all magnets.
